The ED visa is Thailand's education visa — for students, trainees and seminar attendees at a registered institution. It is a distinct route from the DTV's activity-based soft-power category.
Who the ED visa suits
The Non-Immigrant ED visa covers enrolment in a recognised course, vocational training or seminar programme. The institution issues the supporting documentation and coordinates extensions, and stays run 90 days per entry.
Two routes to an ED visa
Where you are when you start determines the whole process — and mixing up the two routes is the most common planning error:

Types of study that qualify
The ED category covers formal academic study, vocational and professional training, and recognised courses and seminars run by a registered institution. What matters in every case is that the school or provider is properly registered and issues genuine enrolment documentation — the legitimacy of the institution is assessed as closely as the student's own paperwork.
Finances and sponsorship
Applicants are expected to show they can support themselves during the course, and where a sponsor covers the costs, the sponsorship itself must be documented. Exact thresholds and acceptable evidence vary by route and by office — verify before assembling the package.
Common reasons ED cases fail
- Route confusion — an embassy document list used for an in-country conversion, or vice versa
- The institution is not properly registered, or its letter is weak
- Enrolment documents do not match the stated purpose of study

ED visa vs the DTV
If you want to train in a cultural activity — Muay Thai, Thai cooking — the DTV soft-power route may fit and offers a far longer stay. For formal academic study, or since Thai language schools no longer qualify for the DTV, the ED visa is the appropriate path.
